For your final essay this semester, choose a controversial or little-known moral, legal, or ethical question connected to music. Describe the issue to educate your reader on it, and take a stand on it. Remember to have an explanation of what other people who’ve studied this issue have to say about it and a response, where you make an argument for your own perspective on the larger conversations. Your essay should also explain why this issue matters and to whom it matters, answering the “so what?” and “who cares?” questions readers may ask.
The essay must include some discussion of “who cares?” and “so what?” as explained in They Say, I Say. In other words, you should let the reader know to whom this topic matters–whether that is special interest groups, scholars in a particular field, etc.–and also explain why it matters, what’s at stake, etc.
***I have included 8 sources for citation- please be sure to use at least 5, any ones work that you see fit.
Here is some ideas I have for thesis statements. Feel free to change them to fit the essay.
Lyrics are often censored or rewritten from their original form when they are played on a public platform such as radio but at what point does censorship go too far, and we become part of a dictatorship regime?
Censoring music for explicit lyrics on the radio or television may be a common practice but censoring a certain artist and their music from being heard because of different religious, political, or social stances is completely unethical.
