The paper can be on a topic of the student’s choosing pertaining to schools and schooling. Fundamentally, the paper should address one or more hypotheses or propositions about effects of schooling and/or the determinants of schooling experiences that are presumed to affect social, emotional or cognitive-academic development. For a list of ILLUSTRATIVE topics that a paper could address, please see syllabus. Please be mindful, that these examples are provided only to give you ideas about the KINDS of topics that could be the focus of the paper. The final choice of topic should be your own.
If you have any doubts about whether the topic you select would meet class requirements, it would be wise to seek counsel from the instructor or the TA. A paper that is judged “out of topic range” will be graded as failing.

The paper should be based on at least 6-8 independently selected scholarly papers published in academic journals (i.e., not newspapers, Wikipedia or other secondary sources).
Format:
The paper length should be 10 pages, not counting references. A complete reference list for all work cited in the paper is required, but no standard reference format required. The paper should be electronically submitted as a Word doc (not PDF).
