Political competence is essential in every institution, whether in the public sector, the medical profession, or the financial business. According to Bacharach (2017), political competence entails:
Recognizing what you can and cannot handle.
Judging the moment of taking action.
Finding supporters.
Defining who you need on your side to carry your initiatives forward.
Even if you have the most brilliant intentions, the most exquisite concepts, and perfect execution techniques, you will be unlikely to succeed if you lack political competence (Bacharach, 2017). Political competence is gained through time by carefully analyzing and interpreting your surroundings to form an alliance of support that will allow you to accomplish your goals (Bacharach, 2017).
Furthermore, Melo et al. (2017) noted, “The nurse’s performance as a sociopolitical being entails the capacity to communicate various information and attributions, which adds to the profession’s strengthening” (p. 527). Because of this, the values, skills, professional standing, and ability to respond to social expectations of a nurse are reflected in her political activity (Melo et al., 2017). As a result, political competence is an essential aspect of the job description for nurses.
A registered nurse in Massachusetts, Sheila Wilson, is an example of a nurse involved in the political process. I believe that Wilson is a strong advocate for nurses in politics. Her personal experience with healthcare violence inspired her to create the nonprofit organization Stop Healthcare Violence (Patton et al., 2019). Due to the nonprofit’s campaigning efforts in Congress, attacking a healthcare professional has been categorized as a criminal violation (Patton et al., 2019). Her advocacy has piqued my interest because of my experience with terrifying attacks from patients in the emergency department. Yes, improving a patient’s quality of life is our primary goal. However, to provide care for our patients, we must first take care of ourselves, which is especially crucial for safety as healthcare professionals. Therefore, we nurses must collaborate to construct a better future for our patients and ourselves.
