Searching for Causes is a kind of argument in which you analyze evidence for a cause and determine whether it plays an important role in bringing about an effect. In the Lead, you will use your imagination and logical thinking skills to consider what cause(s) you need to investigate, including alternate causes you might not have considered.
In this first part of the paper, which you write before you conduct your research, you will speculate about causes pertaining to your research question and explore the following:
• What do I already know about my subject?
• What do I want to know about my subject?
• What primary cause(s) do I need to investigate about my subject?
• What objections and alternate causes do I need to investigate?
For your final essay submission, you should have no fewer than 1 full page in which you capture the interest of your readers through an effective introduction, give them a sense of the direction in which you plan to focus your paper, thoroughly explain what you already know about the topic, identify and discuss each possible cause, note which one(s) you, as the writer, think has played/will play a significant role in bringing about the solution, and establish clear goals and a manageable topic.
Unlike some research papers, you will be writing in first person (hence the name “I-Searchâ€); however, your language must still be formal (no slang, colloquial expressions, or jargon).
