Fiction
Final Paper
The Assignment: This 1800–2000-word essay must focus on some pertinent link between two or three works of fiction read for this class. A pertinent link may be a narrative aspect, a thematic link, or the use of an element of fiction like character, setting, or language. Choose a strong point for you. At least one of the works must be a novel. The ideal link, reflecting your interests, could focus on one of the following topics:
• Analyze, compare, and assess an aspect of narration in the three works. You will want to spend a page describing or explaining the concept before you begin your analysis of the fiction. In assessing, you will be evaluating the concept as a tool that serves your better understanding of fiction.
• Compare the characterization of protagonists and antagonists across three works representing different cultures and time periods, drawing conclusions as to the authors’ common purposes. Note how this expands your understanding of literature as a reflection of the authors’ cultures and values.
• Analyze and evaluate the effect of authorial commentary on society in the literature studied. This means is the author or implied author motivated to persuade your thinking on a subject or make you aware of a subject the author deems socially or politically significant in some way.
• Study the use and effectiveness of one literary element (setting, figurative language, plot development, conflict, or character across three works representing different cultures and time periods. Show how your analysis brings you an understanding of the larger patterns and historical continuity of short stories and novels in style or purpose and discover and how you are able to analyze literary devices used in works of fiction.
• Compare international perspectives on common human concerns in the three works. How do the works reveal what makes the human concerns (death, sexuality, oppression, marriage, war) similar or different? Show how your analysis brings you an understanding of the larger patterns and historical continuity of short stories and novels in style or purpose
• Analyze your three chosen works using one of the critical/theoretical approaches to literary analysis such as formalism, LGBTQ/Queer Marxism, historical criticism, feminism, or postcolonialism, and evaluate the success of the work in achieving the authors’ purposes.
• Propose to me a subject of interest to you that has surfaced over the semester, comparable in complexity to what I have set out in the topics above. Make sure to send me the prompt (like above) before you begin.
This essay must be in MLA format and documentation, double-spaced in a 12-point font. However, you should not need any outside sources.
You will be evaluated on your thoroughness of explanations, use of details, and analysis as well as clarity of writing and demonstration that you have met the student learning outcomes for the course (see the syllabus for the SLOs). I have integrated one of the SLOs into most of the topics I suggested, but your papers will probably reflect all of them. Please do not consciously tick off the SLOs as you compose your paper. The four of them will be reflected as a natural outgrowth of your learning in this course.
For your own success, get started early, converse with other students on discussion boards, and revise your essays at least twice. When you believe you have completed your essay, read it out loud, one sentence at a time, BACKWARDS. Your eyes and ears will find errors in clarity you did not catch when reading top-down as you have memorized it.
