Bossuet and de Maistre both argue for the validity of the French monarchy. However, Bossuet writes during the high point of the Gallican absolutist state whereas de Maistre writes after the citadel has fallen. How does de Maistre offer a far darker, forbidding and philosophical political vision than Bossuet? Both men defended divine right kingship but de Maistre argues against the disintegrative effects of Enlightenment rationalism. Focus your analysis on de Maistre, but use Bossuet as a point of comparison to illustrate the distinctive and pioneering aspects of de Maistre’s thought.
Some key points to consider (You do not need to use all of these in your essay):
The role of Mythos in human societies
The irrational aspects of human psychology
The role of sacrifice and punishment
The continuing vitality of the body politic and the political discourse
Examples of kingship from classical antiquity and Holy Scripture
You must use the chapters assigned in both of the following texts:
Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, Politics drawn from Holy Scripture
Joseph de Maistre, Considerations on France
