It is usually prescribed as a tablet that can be ingested with food or a drink. The main use case of this medication is to reduce blood pressure in a patient when they are nearing the hypertension line. It can also be used in the prevention of cardiac complications such as heart attacks. The brand names of this drug are Renitec (Fig. 1), Acetec (Fig. 2), and Auspril.
Depending on the patient, the dosage can vary from 2.5-20mg a day (NHS, 2018). With children, it is important to note that they should be given lower doses. The reason why the dosage depends on the situation of the patient is due to the fact that Enalapril can be used to resolve numerous things. Someone with hypertension would take it to reduce their blood pressure while someone who has a history of heart attacks might take it to reduce their chances of having one. In these two scenarios, the dosage of Enalapril will not be the same as they are trying to resolve two different issues. The maximum amount of Enalapril that can be taken in a day is 40mg.
Common/Mild Effects: Dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, itchy throat, coughing, lightheadedness, blurry vision, and skin rash (NHS, 2018). If these side effects persist, then the patient should go see their doctor. Anaphylaxis may occur while taking this medication. Additional recent indications of more serious common side effects a person consuming Enalapril will encounter are jaundice, decreased urination, fever and high potassium. (Sinha, 2020)
